Carcinoma in situ (CIS) / Transitional cell carcinoma in situ (TIS)

Carcinoma in situ (CIS) or transitional cell carcinoma in situ (TIS) preceeds invasion of the lamina propria (T1) and can often be seen around the edges of a T1 tumor.  TIS images show an indistinct border between the urothelium (U) and the lamina propria (LP), with poor contrast between these layers. There is still evidence of lamina propria structure and muscularis propria (MP) below the lamina propria.  The border between the lamina propria and muscularis can be distinct, but often inflammation related to the TIS causes the lamina propria to be "patchy" in  color, thereby obscuring the border with the muscularis.
This image shows carcinoma in situe stained with H&E. The images is taken from:  http://www.webpathology.com/slides/slides/Bladder_CIS2(1).jpg
