Papillary tumors

Imaging of papillary tumors is sometimes difficult.  Shown here are some of the papillae of a benign papillary tumor, with an intact lamina propria underneath.  It is often necessary to nestle the probe towards the base of the tumor to visualize the base of the stalk and evaluate for invasion of the lamina propria.  An image taken from the tip or stalk of the papillae may look like normal epithelium, albeit very thick.
This image is of  a papillary tumor of the bladder, as seen during cystoscopy.  The image is taken from : http://www.pathology.washington.edu/about/
